Tales for Tails: Kids Reading to Our Shelter Animals

A Heartwarming Introduction: Today marked a special moment at our shelter with the launch of “Tales for Tails: Kids Reading to Our Shelter Animals.” Young Leslie, an eager volunteer, sat down with Snoopy, a dog with a challenging past, to read “Princess Charity’s Golden Heart.” This scene was not just adorable but a symbolic start to a program aimed at enriching the lives of both children and animals in our care.

The Power of Reading: Inspired by the positive impacts documented in similar programs, our Shelter Director was eager to implement this initiative. When Leslie’s mother approached ICARE about volunteering, it was the perfect opportunity to kickstart “Tales for Tails.” Experienced with other shelter reading programs, her mother was thrilled to have ICARE introduce such a program in Melbourne. It’s well-documented that reading to children can calm and bond them, and now, our shelter dogs are enjoying these same soothing benefits.

Snoopy’s Story: Among the dogs benefiting from this program is Snoopy. Found with a broken leg and no front teeth, likely from attempting to escape a chained existence, his resilience and gentle nature have touched us all. Despite his past, Snoopy’s affectionate demeanor makes him a perfect listener for our young readers.  The image of Leslie reading to him has moved many to tears, showcasing the profound connection formed between child and animal through a simple story.

Scientific Backing: Our “Tales for Tails” program isn’t just feel-good; it’s rooted in science! Studies, like one from Applied Animal Behaviour Science, show that audiobooks can really help dogs in shelters relax more and feel less anxious. This research supports our belief that reading to dogs makes a real difference in their well-being. Check out the study for yourself: Brayley, C. & Montrose, V. T. (2016). A Win-Win Initiative: “Tales for Tails” is more than just a reading program; it’s a path to healing and happiness for both kids and dogs. As our young volunteers grow in their literacy, shy shelter dogs gain sociability, becoming more adoptable. It’s a circle of positivity, enhancing the wellbeing of our animals while providing a rewarding experience for children. We believe in the power of every story to make tails wag and hearts warm, and we invite the community to join us in this beautiful journey.
